The Gift of God’s Presence in the Present

Psalm 139 - Your Days Written in His Books

Take a few moments to read through Psalm 139 piece by piece and drink it into your spirit. Notice that in verse 16, everything was written in His books before we were even born.

As we're guided by His word, we can trust His goodness. His purposes are higher than all. There's no higher calling than yielding to His forming hands on the soft clay of our hearts and lives.

His rewards rest on the soul who diligently seeks Him and embraces His ways. When we know who He is and how He is, we naturally trust Him, soften, and surrender.

When we question His sovereignty and character, we naturally doubt Him, stiffen, and choose our own way to our own hurt. He promised us trials either way.

Trust and Obey... For There's No Other Way...

If we choose to trust His way, He also promised to be with us through the trials as they bring forth the contextual treasures of goodness in our lives. As we trust and obey, surely goodness and mercy shall follow us all of our days.

In the wake of following Him through thick and thin, everything is for our good - guaranteed. When He is our overarching priority, life becomes simple.

Every step becomes a walk together in the eternal present which unfolds moment by moment and day by day. Note that His presence (a gift in the now) is the present (gift) but only in the eternal plane of the now.

Choosing His Present for Our Future

Even in His eternal being that exists beyond time, He can not occupy our anxious projections of the "future" because they are merely the imaginations of our own heart and a turning away from His.

Our "future" becomes a present (gift) when it is in the now, but at that stage it is no longer the future. Until it is unwrapped and unfolded in the loving gift of His present presence, it remains a mystery of specifics wrapped up in days still to come, yet a certainty in goodness because He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Everything outside of the light of His now presence is shadow at best. Let us not walk in darkness. His Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.

Harden Not Our Hearts

Today, let us hear the voice of the Word and harden not our hearts allowing the light of His presence to shine into our now. Today, or more specifically this very moment, is the only place we can experience peace.

May we invite His presence into our now with obedient hearts and live there forever in the goodness and mercy that follows. Leaving both lawlessness and legalism we "ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls." (Jeremiah 6:16)

His Yoke is Easy

The shed blood of Yeshua/Jesus sets us free to trust and obey. He says, "Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly of heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30)

Let's walk in trust and obedience to God. Now is the time. In fact, now is all the time we will ever have.

All-In? The Difference between 99.5% and 100% is Night and Day!

Cleaned Up Video Transcript and Few Added References…

Okay, trying this again… so, this is Curtis Abbott’s first Facebook Live, Take Two! Anyway, I wanted to talk about something that happened recently with the whole eclipse thing that was just wild.

So, here’s everybody coming up from all over the country, wanting to go to the path of totality, a lot of people stay at home and figured… Oh well, 95 percent is surely good enough, we’re gonna get the basics of it and everything.

I’m really so, so happy that after a significant little internal family debate as to whether we were going to go because its the first day of CC. (Classical Conversations,1 basically homeschool with the kids but in a collaborative setting) You know, you’re paying for it, and the eclipse fell on that first day of CC and so, do we go, do we not?

Finally, we decided, Hey, we’ve got to do this, it doesn’t happen that often, let’s take the trip to the path of totality. So, with some good friends, we went up to St. Claire, MO. It was really cool, an AG Church had opened up their parking lot.

The Most Powerful Illustration of my Life

But, I want to bring out some real practical insights relating to what we learned from the eclipse. This is why I am so thankful that I took my kids up to the path of totality with the eclipse. Because, for me, it was the most powerful illustration that I’ve probably ever had in my whole life. I mean… Here I am I’m getting a little emotional, that’s funny. Basically, just seconds before the total eclipse, literally seconds, you couldn’t even look at the Sun. Unless you put on your special little glasses, you can’t even really tell anything significant was happening.

Minutes Before Totality

Just minutes Before Totality

I could totally see going through a situation, let’s say, that’s a 90% or 95% eclipse and if I wasn’t in a society that it was spread all over Facebook and all over the news. Let’s say it was a couple hundred years ago and let’s say you’re out on a farm and you never even knew it was happening. I could totally see having a situation where the eclipse came and went. Not in the path of totality but where it came and went like on a Springfield level or maybe an Arkansas level eclipse and we never even knew it was happening. It came and went and you didn’t really know. But the path of totality, where the whole Sun was blocked out, where the crickets start singing, we even had little spiders come up out of the grass. It was kind of cool and the stars come out, you even got the circular horizon sunset. But the main thing I really learned from that was how different it is to be 100% all-in versus just 99%, because the second that eclipse was over, BAM you couldn’t even look at the Sun anymore. BAM, it’s basically full-on daylight again.

What about our life in God?

As it applies to my life, I’ll tell you what it really spoke to me, is the difference between being completely sold out to God and being 99%. How radical that difference actually is! It’s Huge! It’s huge, I mean imagine how big of a deal that could be in your marriage. I know for me being 100%, it’s night and day. It’s kind of funny, it was like night and day at the eclipse but it’s like night and day being 100% all-in on anything that you set your heart to. It’s not just a 1% difference.

The difference between 99% and 100%, is not that mere 1%. The difference is literally night and day! The difference is more like several hundredfold. It could be literally the difference between radical success and abject failure.

As I’ve just pondered that, I’ve thought about in my life with God and in walking with God, I want to walk the path of totality. You know, never get in that place where I’m halfway. Now obviously, I think that’s probably somewhat impractical, I mean, we’re all human, and I know I certainly am.

I know what walking in the path of totality actually is, I’ve experienced it. I know the difference. I’ve gone up to st. Clair and experienced that, I know the difference between 99% and 100%. I know 99% isn’t good enough. I know 99% is a night and day difference, that makes all the difference in the world. I know a lot of times in my life I’ve held back and if I’m holding back from God, if I’m holding back from my marriage, if I’m holding back for anything, if I’m holding back and reserving some small little element where I’m not truly all-in, the difference you might think won’t make that big a difference. But, it could literally be the difference between complete radical life change, complete radical success, a complete just miraculous breakthrough versus a dismal failure where the whole opportunity came and went and nobody knows the difference.

Life is but a Vapor,2 100% Surrender is Worth It!

So, I want to be in that place where I’m walking the path of totality before God. You know, not because wild stuff is happening in the world today, not because all this stuff I think it is pretty wild that in just the last two weeks we’ve got this huge hurricane situation that happened in Houston with unprecedented damage and we’ve got this other huge hurricane that’s on its way that’s of unprecedented strength. Who knows how all that’ll play out. You got over a million acres burned up, you got a record-breaking hurricane down in Mexico. Does all that mean anything else? Could all that be a coincidence? Maybe, but what my point is actually that we want to walk the path of totality before God regardless of what is happening around us.

We don’t want to have the events of let’s say the Great Tribulation come upon us and Okay now we get right with God. No, every single day says today is the day of salvation when walking a path of 100% surrender. I think it’s easy to go through life and be 100% for a little while and things don’t happen as quickly as you think or maybe you the results you were shooting for didn’t come or you were praying and praying and praying and the life change you were seeking, or the deliverance in your life, or the healing or the repaired marriage just didn’t happen. Whatever the case may be, whatever it is there’s a huge difference between walking the path of totality and being just 1% off. The difference is night and day.

It’s not just walking the path of totality for a day, it’s not just walking the path of totality for a month or for a year. I’m talking about being completely and utterly sold out for the totality of our lives.

What does it mean if you invest your whole life in being sold out to God and you’re like one of those in Hebrews Chapter 11? Where you die in faith having not received the promise.3 One of the beautiful things in God is, just like the miracle of compound interest, God pays dividends. If you go into eternity having invested faith, having invested obedience, having invested walking a path sold out, walking a path of totality before God and, let’s say, that’s not rewarded in the earth realm. Hey, let me let you know, God says that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.4

Not Receiving the Promise?

If you die in faith having not yet received the promise… I know you don’t even want to think about that because you’re like, Hey I want to walk the path of totality, I want to believe God, I want to pray through, I want to get results now. Great! Me too. But, what if you died in faith having not received the promise? What if you went to that place where you pass on to the other side? Let me let you know that you can’t out give God. You’re not more committed than God. And if God chooses, in his divine providence, to have a reward for you that was greater than earth could possibly compensate for and you were chosen to be almost like a martyr, who died in faith having not received the promise, in whatever area of life. Imagine the exponential rewards that are going to come to you in the life to come.5 You know, that comforts my soul and it gets me out of thinking about the day-to-day, it gets me out of thinking about natural results.

I want natural results, I want to see the glory of God in the land of the living.6 But what if, what if we don’t see it. Basically the reason I bring this up is because it’s an insulator to discouragement and a fortifier of enduring faith because if everything hinges upon seeing the glory of God in the land of the living like David and all of us hope for, well when a day passes, a month passes, a year passes, multiple years pass and you don’t see it, you’re gonna be tempted potentially to shrink back.7 You’re gonna be tempted potentially to get discouraged and I want to die in faith. Even if I don’t receive the promise I want to walk the path of totality every day of my life and I want to have people in my life that if I veer from the path of totality they call me on it.8 I don’t want to live this little cordial existence where we all just pat each other on the back and say we’re doing good when we’re not there. That’s where I want to be and so I just had these thoughts on my mind.

Where the Rubber Meets the Road

I shed a tear or two but just like when my kids and I went up to St. Claire and we saw that eclipse and we saw the seconds before and the seconds right after.

This illustration of the difference between being 100% and 99.9%, and how it is literally like night and day, is such a powerful illustration for how we should live our lives; how we should live our lives before God, how we should live our lives for our family, how we should live our lives in every single aspect. Are we in or are we out?

Like that scripture says, I wish that you were either cold or hot but because you’re lukewarm I’ll spew you out of my mouth.9 I don’t want to be in that place, I don’t want to be lukewarm, I don’t want to be cold, I want to be hot. I want to walk the path of totality to my dying day and so, Hey hold me accountable to that. Because that’s where I want to be.

So anyway, I just had a few thoughts to share and does anybody have any thoughts that have joined the Facebook Live here? Feel free to chime in. I’ll give you a second before I put it to a close.

I want to pray… Father, in the name of Yeshua, I pray that I walk the rest of my days in the path of totality. I pray that if I’m not in the path of totality right now that you bring the illumination of the Holy Spirit and that you put a spotlight on my soul10 and Father, repentance would come. I pray that every day of my life and I pray every single one of us that sees this video would be encouraged to be sold out, to be 100%, to not be lukewarm, to be red-hot in our pursuit and service of your Kingdom.11 In the name of Yeshua.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Proverbs 3:5-6 – Part 2 – Yada-yada is THE SECRET of life!

Note: The below is loosely based upon the video closed caption transcript. Some things are added, altered, expanded upon, or removed. Either way, it still reads a lot like the video.

Yada, Yada, Yada is THE SECRET to Life

In all your ways acknowledge Him… yada-yada-yada. No, I am not mocking Scripture but rather bringing out the most important purpose of our entire existence. We were created to know and be known by God. The Hebrew word for to know is yada. The word translated acknowledge is this Hebrew word yada, 1 to know. This is the same word used for Adam knew Eve. 2

Just hover your mouse over any footnote and the contents will appear in a little box.

Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.

Let’s focus on this whole concept of acknowledging Him. I think this is the secret to being able to trust God with your whole heart, which I’m learning more and more as I push into these things myself and as I seek purification through His Spirit. 3 One of the things I do regularly is to ask God to purge me from an evil heart of unbelief. 4 I think so much of this walk comes down to whether we actually believe God, 5 whether we actually believe what He says 6 and actually believe that He is good. 7 If you think about it, if we knew with every ounce of our being, the practical reality of heaven and earth, of who He is in His fullness, we would pursue God with our whole heart, 8 with nothing held back, 9 and it would just be a natural reaction to a true revelation of His Character.

To know Him is to trust Him, to know Him is to love Him, to know Him is to obey Him, to know Him is to be motivated to pursue Him.

In all your ways acknowledge Him. The Hebrew word there for acknowledge is very interesting, like I mentioned above it is the word yada in the Hebrew. The root Hebrew character analysis in simple form reveals yod, daled, ayin. Yod means work, throw, worship. Dalad means movement, hang, enter. Ayin means know, watch, eye. Throw yourself into the active pursuit of entering the window of God’s soul. Ayin is silent. Be still and know that I am God. 10 Knowing Him is beyond words. We can rest in truly knowing Him. 11 I like to say that really knowing God, really pursuing God, really loving God with your whole heart is all about Yada, Yada, Yada. It’s all about knowing Him, it’s all about to know, to know, to know God.

Becoming One with Our Good Good Father

This same word yada is used for “Adam knew Eve” and they became one flesh. 12 Adam knew Eve. When they had that intimacy of communion, that intimacy of sexual relation, that intimacy of becoming one with, becoming echad. 13 Echad is the Hebrew word for one there, to be intertwined and intermingled with. Aleph, Chet, Daled esoterically points to His power passes the divide and enters you. He devirginizes our flesh and penetrates our soul by His Spirit and we are owned by Him and Him alone. I want to stress this concept of knowing Him and pursuing knowing Him with everything that we are. Obviously, this involves complete surrender, this involves opening oneself in complete transparency before Him. We take on His Name!

With this little play on words, yada-yada-yada, we oftentimes use that term as in talking, talking, talking. That is another aspect of how we get to know Him. We get to know Him by bearing 14 our soul to Him. 15 We get to know him by acknowledging Him in all our ways. Where there are no more hidden places, there are no nooks, there are no crannies, we’ve invited Him into every single aspect of our life. I was talking to somebody the other day who was having some issues with drug addiction challenges and I encouraged her to stay linked with God, stay one with God, even when she’s going through that strong temptation. As temptation comes if you can bring God in, He brings light, if you will, into that darkness. What happens when light enters darkness? It illuminates that place. The enemy loses his hold when we bring light into darkness and so often when we’re struggling in some area that’s giving us a challenge, so often that’s the time in which we draw back from God. That’s a time in which we tend to leave God behind, we shut the door, and we hide from Him.

Bringing Light into Darkness

Imagine for a moment, if you actually stayed lock-armed with God when you went into the most challenging places of your soul, the areas in which you’re struggling to overcome, the areas in which you’re embarrassed and ashamed. Imagine, if we were willing to risk the transparency of staying lock-armed with God through the darkness. And as we go through that temptation, the light of His presence illumines what typically is in darkness. It’s going to completely undermine the ability of the enemy to maintain that hold on your soul. Because his tactics work in darkness, but God is light. And so, when we bring God into every nook and cranny of our life, we find freedom in every nook and cranny of our life when we walk with God in that way. Acknowledge him in all of our ways because here’s reality, he is there! There’s nowhere on earth, there’s nowhere even in the depths of Hell that His presence is not. He is there, His love is there! Since He’s already there, he already knows when you’re there. So, why not stay lock-armed with Him?

I’m not saying we come to a place that’s sacrilegious and fails to recognize His Holiness. But the reality is, God wants to be one with you. The reality is, He wants to be one with me. The reality is, the Scriptures say, “He who joins himself with the Lord is one spirit. 16 And in the context of that passage, it says, “shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of a harlot? God forbid.” Then goes on to say that, “What? know ye not that he which is joined to a harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.” 17 And so, it’s actually, most likely talking about some form of temple prostitution in that case but nonetheless notice that in the context of that verse, someone is becoming one with a prostitute and they’re bringing the members of Messiah into that because when we’re one with Him, were inseparable from Him. We are bone of His bone and flesh of His flesh. 18 We can trick ourselves that He’s not there, but He’s always with us. He’ll never leave us or forsake us.

Who We Hang Out with Matters (a lot)

And so, if we begin to learn to, in all our ways acknowledge Him, acknowledging His presence, acknowledging His desire to impart wisdom, and to have deep and intimate fellowship with us, then it changes everything. Understanding and acknowledging His wisdom, His presence, His love, His light and beginning to walk or continuing in a path of walking with Him in that. Imagine, how transformative that would be to our lives. There’s no part of our life that He does not want to be a part of. Communicating with Him, yada-yada-yada. It’s not the same to talk to yourself than it is to talk to God. One of the things that I’m really working on is seeking to commune with God more and more through the whole of life, through the mundane. Just as if I had another physical person in the room with me while I’m working on a project, let’s say, writing this article or whatever the case may be. If we had someone else looking over our shoulder, giving us insight, we’d acknowledge what their attention is brought to and what input they would have on our work. Their mere presence changes the environment.

Imagine, if we walked with God in that way. Imagine, how over time we’d grow in our union with Him. Imagine, how that would enlighten our minds, as He speaks in that still small voice as we draw from the generative reality of His presence. Imagine, just like if you had a highly intimate relationship that you’ve been in for very long-time where you simply begin to think alike. Imagine, if we walked with God to such a level in which we begin to think alike, where we have the mind of Messiah like the scripture says. 19 What if we could come to a place where no longer are His thoughts higher than our thoughts? What if we actually became one with God where our thoughts became almost synonymous with His thoughts? Now, I know He’s infinite and He’s all-knowing but what if we’d bridge at least some of that gap, that veil of the flesh, and came into supernatural revelation, a supernatural relationship that’d begin to melt away the separation between who we are and who He is? What if we so melded with Him, that we like it goes on in that verse and He shall direct our paths because we are guided by His eyes and His heart? What if we so melded with Him that we were directed in this way, where we were just one with God, and we walked with Him in all our ways and everywhere we went? What if wherever we went the presence of God went? Imagine, what’s potentially available!

Henry Varley said to the young D.L. Moody, “The world has yet to see what God can do with and for and through and in a man who is fully and wholly consecrated to Him.”

I believe that quote is true! I believe that there’s a higher place in God that our modern world has yet to see. Think about it, Enoch walked with God and was not. I imagine it almost as if Enoch was in this relationship, so intimate with God, so one with God, that he began to shift dimensionally. Perhaps one moment he was in the flesh and one moment he was in the spirit, one moment he was in the realm of Earth and one moment he was stepping into the realms of Heaven. And as he phase shifted periodically as that relationship heightened and heightened and heightened, perhaps one day he was walking with God and just was not. He didn’t come back. He stayed on the other side.

Broadening Perspectives toward Knowing God

Paul said, “For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain… and I don’t know what to choose.” 20 You know, we don’t really understand these kind of concepts. What are they actually talking about? Are these things available to us? Well, it’s in the scripture and it’s true for others, so it’s available in the spirit. I just want to broaden the perspective of what intimacy with God could mean. What if you became so intimately communed and so intimately one with God that like Peter you got to the place that anyone within the distance of your shadow was healed? 21 What if you, like Paul, were at the place where he took kerchiefs and such and he’d wipe the sweat off his brow and his essence was so intermixed with God’s essence that these towels were brought to the sick or demon-possessed and they were healed or delivered. 22 Think about that.

In all your ways acknowledge Him. What benefit are we getting from having hidden places? What satisfaction is derived from being less than 100% sold out to God? 23 The Bible says that He knows those that are His. 24 Some people see walking with God as something that’s going to restrict their life in some negative way as if they’re not going to be able to enjoy life if they give themselves fully unto God. That’s not a scripture understanding of walking with God. In wisdom’s left hand are riches and honor 25 and in her right hand is length of days. In God’s right hand are pleasures forevermore and in His presence fullness of joy for He shows us the path of life. 26 Walking with God is a path of blessing but even if this life holds only trials and tribulations 27 because of what God’s called you to do, 28 think about this, that just puts an exponential reward on the rewards of heaven.

God pays extraordinary compound interest on unanswered prayers. The greater the delay, the greater the reward. The greatest reward of all is to die in faith having not yet received the promise. What is planted, yet not harvested in this life, is rewarded exponentially in the next. – Curtis Abbott

Imagine, God’s not going to allow anything you go through to remain unrewarded. He says He’s a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. 29 And if there’s any reward that doesn’t come on earth, it’s delayed let’s say or something of that nature, surely you could imagine there’s no investment on earth that out pays God’s investment in his people? He’s going to take things and on the other side, if you are faithful to Him and become one with Him, if your whole heart is devoted to becoming interlinked with God and be sold out to His purposes, sold out to His presence, sold out to knowing Him, make no mistake, He’s gonna pay rich dividends. Think about the miracle of compound interest on earth, do you think it compares to the miracle of a life invested in God yet not fully rewarded in the land of the living? Think about what that means in terms of eternity! Get the vision for that. I want to get the vision for that!

I want to live in light of eternity, I want to live in light of the truths that we are talking about right now, I want to become one with the truth. Just like Messiah was the word that became flesh and dwelt among us, God desires His word to become flesh in us. He desires us to to become one with Him. Like the Messiah said, Father, I pray that they be one even as we are one. Let us become one with God and one with each other. Let us acknowledge Him in all of our ways. A lot of times we say we know something when we just can spout it out mentally. No, when we know something we become one with it. Under my clock I’ve got a saying that I felt like God gave me a couple years ago that’s real humility provoking.

It says this…

“I only know as much as results show. If my results don’t show it, then I don’t know it, it’s still something I’m trying to learn.”

That quote helps me recognize the divide between the way we typically use the word know and the way God wants us to know His Word, the way God wants us to know His spirit, the way God wants us to know Him. And so, yada-yada-yada. To know him, to know him, to know him. Did you know that that word in the Hebrew yada shows up almost five times more than the word love in Hebrew. And so, to know Him is to love Him. He truly is a good good Father. There’s no purpose for our lives that extends greater than actually knowing Him.

Our Eternal Great Reward at Risk

Matthew 7:22-27 says, “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

There’s nothing more important than knowing Him and to know Him is to obey Him. Of course, He is love and so to know Him is to love him, to fully know Him is to become an embodiment of love, an embodiment of His spirit but in the full expression of who He reveals himself to be throughout all of Scripture.

May we acknowledge Him in all of our ways. That’s the prayer of my heart. I just want to pray right now, Father, I just pray for myself and for anybody here, that Father you’d put within us a revelation of what is available through pushing into You, the treasures of Your Presence, the treasures of Your Personhood. I pray that You’d give us a revelation that would cause us to have a motivation to pursue You with everything that we are, holding nothing back, pursuing You to purify our hearts so there’s nothing that separates us from walking in the fullness of what You intended that relationship to be. Open the eyes of our understanding to pursue you, give us a knowledge of who You are that’s an inseparable knowledge that becomes something that cannot be lost, something that doesn’t just exist in our minds, but something that we know fully in our hearts, something that has become flesh in us. Father, we want to know the tangibility of Your presence, we want to know You in the power of Your resurrection, and in the fellowship of Your sufferings. We want to know you to the place in which we can consider it pure joy when we encounter trials of many kinds. We want to know You. Amen.

God bless you all!

Proverbs 3:5-6 – Part 1 – Trust in God, Not Yourself

Knowing Immunity from Immunity

There are certain scriptures in the Bible that we hear so often, that if we are not careful, we can become immune to their power. Proverbs 3:5-6 is definitely one of those verses. It’s important to remember that we only know that which we have become one with. In other words, we only know that which we habitually personify. Our school system tends to foster a mindset that because you can merely select the right answer via multiple choice you actually know something. But just as Yeshua/Jesus was the Word that became flesh and dwelt among us, 1 so he wants to make his Word become living flesh in us. 2

Just hover your mouse over any footnote and the contents will appear in a little box.

There’s a proverb among the Asaro tribe of Indonesia that says, “Knowledge is only a rumor until it lives in the muscle.” May the Word of the Living God live in our muscles, permeate our innermost being, transform our thinking, and revolutionize our lives. 3

Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart… Yes, easier said than done! Truly trusting God is to fully embrace him as our Master, our King, our Creator. It is he who has made us and not we ourselves. 4 He is the potter and we are the clay. 5 We surrender our identity into his 6 and we take on his name. To trust in the Lord is to not only understand the reality that he is Lord 7 but to proactively lay down our rights to run our own life 8 and to surrender to his Lordship not just once and for all, but actively and intentionally everyday. There is something about being a living sacrifice, 9 in that, as a living sacrifice you have the ability to get off the altar, but as a living sacrifice we have to make the daily choice 10 to stay on it.

Where’s your Ladder Leaning?

And lean not unto thine own understanding… The Hebrew word for lean in this passage is Sha’an. 11 A short definition would be: to support one’s self; lean, lie, rely, rest (on, self), stay. This is the same word used for Samson leaning upon the pillars supporting the party house of the Philistines, 12 and in Isaiah “Woe to them that…rely on horses and trust in chariots…but don’t seek God” 13 It’s impossible to trust God and to rely or lean on our own understanding at the same time. 14 His ways are higher than our ways and his thoughts are higher than our thoughts. We must relinquish our own understanding 15 in preference to his understanding, his wisdom, 16 and his thoughts. 17 If we prefer our own thoughts over his thoughts, we are leaning on our own understanding and not trusting in him who sees the end from the beginning, 18 orchestrates all things in alignment with his will, 19 and upholds everything by the word of his power. 20 By his grace, we draw 21 our next breath. 22 It is in him that we live, move, and have our being. 23 To know him is to trust him. 24

The Fool and His Fables

We tend to look at the Scriptures and super-impose 25 our own pre-existing understandings 26 upon them. We are so far removed from true Biblical culture and a Hebrew mindset, yet we presume 27 to know the truth, we presume to know what is right and wrong, 28 not recognizing that our own thoughts, our own paradigms, and the lenses through which we view the world have polluted our minds. 29 Fainthearted Beware: Try bringing up polygamy in just about any modern church today and note the attitudes that quickly surface wanting to excommunicate the majority of the patriarchs of Scripture and possibly even you as well because you dared to mention it. I don’t know about you, but I would love to have David along side of me in a worship service. Something tells me that I could learn a thing or two. Why is it that we often times feel so bolstered and arrogant in our modern worldview that we’ll stand in judgment of God’s Word 30 rather than actively pursue to being transformed by it? 31

2 Timothy 3:16-17: All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

When the above verse was written the only Scripture known was the Hebrew Scriptures. The Body of Messiah was yet to be immersed in Hellenistic Greek and Roman thinking, yet today, we virtually know nothing else. We must trust in God with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding. We must recognize that if there’s anything in the Scriptures that runs cross-grain with our thinking, it is our duty to intentionally choose to put our thinking on trial 32 before God and his Word rather than to put God and his Word on trial 33 before the pride and arrogance of our thinking. We must recognize that anything that is in us that stands in judgment of the Word or in criticism of God’s judgments, is the fruit of a haughty spirit corrupted by the world 34 or simply our carnal mind which is enmity before God. 35 May we all be soft and moldable clay in the hands of the Master Potter. May we all be vessels of honor fit for the Master’s use. 36

The Secret to Real Change is Yada, Yada, Yada

In all your ways acknowledge him… Yada, yada, yada. No, I am not mocking Scripture but rather bringing out one of the most important purposes of our entire existence. We were created to know and be known by God. The Hebrew word for ‘to know’ is ‘yada’.
